Curriculum Goals

The goals of this classroom curriculum model are to:

  • Engage students in active learning
  • Provide connections to classroom experiences
  • Build an environment for creativity
  • Promote an awareness of our region’s past, present and future
  • Assist individual schools and districts in meeting their curriculum goals as aligned with state standards and benchmarks

Curriculum Focus

The KNS curriculum focus is on building literacy through experience. In our exhibits and accompanying activities we hope to provide opportunities beyond the classroom for students to enhance their skills in critical thinking, reading, writing, verbal communication, problem solving and individual and group decision-making. While we provide skill-building opportunities in an open and relaxed, yet challenging, environment apart from the classroom, we are closely connected to the classroom. With an emphasis on the standards and benchmarks of the Michigan Curriculum Framework, we have developed a curriculum design that links museum exhibits and activities to classroom practices. Each of our curriculum components includes pre and post activities to connect the museum experience directly to classroom instruction. Whether student needs focus on basic curriculum, remedial instruction, or enrichment opportunities, the KNS experience will help reach across the curriculum by engaging students in multi-faceted, hands-on learning. As students build on their creative talents at KNS their skills in investigation, communication and problem solving will be challenged and enhanced. At KNS our aim is to move children one step forward on the road to academic achievement and lifelong learning.
